Taken from Elio Pace's social media post: WEEKEND WOGAN 10th ANNIVERSARY SERIES - Show 15/35 12.42pm, live on BBC Radio 2 on Sunday, 27 June 2010… the classic Chas & Dave hit, ‘Ain’t No Pleasing You’. I’ve always loved Chas & Dave and especially THIS song, which takes me back to being a school kid in the early 80’s. ‘Ain’t No Pleasing You’ was their biggest hit, reaching No.2 in the UK charts in 1982. Seven years later, in Great Yarmouth in 1989 (during my one and only summer season, opening for Michael Barrymore) Chas Hodges and Dave Peacock (along with their drummer Mick Burt) came to town to do a Sunday concert and through my dear friend Hilary O’Neil, I got to meet them after their show and grab a photo with them. I was 21 and in awe. That night we all ended up in a restaurant that stayed open for us until approx. 5am whilst the wine flowed and we passed an acoustic guitar around the table jamming and having a good ole sing-song! Incredible memories! 🎶 Although I was lucky enough to have briefly bumped into the chaps a couple of times over the years (mainly because of the fact that Albert Lee and Chas Hodges were best mates from having created the iconic band 'Heads, Hands & Feet'), I didn’t really know them well. So you can imagine how my head exploded when I received an email from Chas in 2010 saying that he’d heard my live performance of his song ‘Ain’t No Pleasing You’ on BBC Radio 2’s Weekend Wogan. Chas gave me permission at the time to publish his lovely email and so I’d like to share it with you now, 10 years later: "Elio, Finally saw your version of 'Ain't No Pleasin' You'. You done a grand job. Really good arrangement retaining the flavour but doing it your way. Did you do the arrangement? Same goes for your vocal & piano. Some of your own bits came from within & sounded good. Only one criticism. You over did the cockney in the 'bluffin' bit. But you can be forgiven for that. The rest made up for it! Chas" It's not everyday that one of your heroes writes to you, let alone with such kind words. I, of course, wrote back to Chas thanking him profusely, and on the subject of "bluffin" I said: "Let me just say about the bluffin' bit... I purposely overdid it as a 'nod' to you guys. Not saying that you sound THAT cockney but I wanted to sing one line as a tribute to you and make it obvious to the listener that I was paying respect to your classic record.” In hindsight I should have just said “Yeah you’re right Chas, I DID overdo it. I got a little over excited about performing your beautiful song, one of my all-time favourites, to millions of listeners on national radio!” 🤣 I was as high as a kite for weeks with Chas’ compliments and revisiting this performance on ‘Weekend Wogan’ takes me right back to that very happy place.❤️ ____________________ Terry's special guests this week were Tony Hadley, Jodie Prenger and Rick Astley. ________________ For more info, tour dates, CDs and DVDs and more, please visit https://www.eliopace.com/
