They’re delicious like candy and can save up to 330,000 gallons of water per season per acre—they’re dry-farmed tomatoes! On this live and in-person special tour at 21 Acres, farmers Anthony Reyes and Ansley Roberts talk dry farming and ask farmers’ burning questions about dry-farmed tomatoes. Why dry farm tomatoes? In this video you’ll learn about: • Sugar content in dry farmed tomatoes versus irrigated tomatoes • When and how to start dry farmed tomatoes • Other regenerative practices that we use to grow tomatoes and other crops The practice of dry-farming is ancient and by necessity; in hot climates, farmers didn’t often have the luxury of watering crops. But the practice became popularized in southern and central California, where dry-farmed tomatoes became a chef favorite for the intense, sweet flavor. Early Girl and New Girl tomatoes grown by Molino Creek Farm in Davenport, California are now the go-to dry-farmed tomato variety, including here on the 21 Acres farm. Thank you to Liz Ostasiewski for the video. ** At 21 Acres, located in Woodinville, Washington, we inspire action to solve climate challenges by learning as a community to grow, eat, and live sustainably.
