Foraging for gorse | Natural dyeing | How the garden began | A new story | Seeking rowan twigs | Spring garden tour | A bedtime visitor Life down a winding country lane in North Norfolk. In the quiet of the countryside, late April springs into a riot of birdsong, sunshine and the coconut scent of warmed gorse on the heath. There are still some damp days and chilly nights but life is definitely burgeoning forth. Until recently I’ve never told the tale of how I actually came to be here at The Old Shop. But a few people have asked about the background to my story, and now has felt like the right time to dig out those old photos and start to set down what actually led me here. This time we look at what happened to the garden after the builders trashed the cottage and front garden, abandoning what they had started long before the cottage was habitable. With minimal funds remaining and no building or project management skills I had to work out what to do next. With lots of conflicting advice I made decisions then that I might not make now, but I've come to accept that we can only do what we think is right at the time and then go on from there. I would love to think that my story might help someone else who feels that things have gone from bad to worse and that everything is so messed up there's no hope of redemption. The swallows always come back, and the each spring scent of wild garlic carries in the air. If you enjoy the videos and would like to support my work, I’ve managed to install an option where you can buy me a coffee should you wish. And you know how much I love coffee! Thank you so much, if you choose to do this now and again. Buy me a coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/imogenashwt Last November I started Bracken & Wrack, a magazine-style Substack newsletter created for each new and full moon. Landscape, magic, old ways, recipes, seasonal musings and more. It’s much like the videos but in written form and with more scope to go all over the place! There’s less focus on the cottage and more on the folklore under our feet. Delivered straight to your inbox, it is free to subscribe, and you can sign up over at https://imogenashwin.substack.com. There will be a new Bracken & Wrack newsletter for the May full moon, so I’d love your company for that!
