The vihuela, the most emblematic and distinctive instrument of the Spanish Renaissance, achieved an almost noble status thanks to the extraordinary quality of the music contained in the collections of Luis Milán, Luis de Narváez, and Alonso Mudarra, among others. Published in just a decade (between 1536 and 1546) in three different cities (Valencia, Valladolid, and Seville), they explored all the possibilities of the instrument, leaving ample room for what, five centuries later, still sound like freely improvised fantasies.
