The ilioinguinal nerve pierces the transversus abdominis and internal oblique muscle to enter the inguinal canal. It then travels through the inguinal canal to provide motor and sensory functions: Motor innervation is provided to the transversus abdominis muscle and the internal oblique abdominal muscle.
