WATCH: Rep. Stansbury says GOP has been too busy dismantling DEI to focus on America’s fiscal health

The House Subcommittee on Delivering on Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by chairwoman Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, had its first hearing Wednesday. But ranking member Rep. Melanie Stansbury, D-N.M., took issue with the idea that Republicans are really focused on fiscal responsibility. “Literally, the Republicans just released their plan to raise the debt limit while we were sitting here and they want to raise it by $4 trillion,” Stansbury said. The hearing focused on financial waste in the U.S. government. Stansbury questioned whether that mission lined up with President Donald Trump’s priorities since taking office. “Donald Trump did not run on putting an unelected billionaire in charge of dismantling the federal government,” she said, referring to Elon Musk. “He ran on lowering prices for Americans.” She also noted new reports of economic inflation on the rise. “What's going on, guys? I thought you were gonna tackle inflation and food and energy prices. Isn't that what the executive orders were supposed to do? Oh, wait, or is dismantling diversity, equity and inclusion and our federal agencies and putting an ideological agenda and trying to fire the federal workforce your actual agenda? Have you been too busy trying to actually address the fiscal health of this country? Because the numbers are telling us that you have,” Stansbury said.
