HOME AGING Whiskey in a MINI BARREL!

We got a mini whiskey barrel! But, I hear you ask, what's the point of a mini whiskey barrel? Essentially, the idea behind a mini whiskey barrel is to super-charge the aging of a whiskey, or add some new flavours to it. In this case, the cask came from Toneleria Juan Pino in Spain, and was pre-seasoned with sherry! So, a couple of weeks ago, I won an Instagram competition organised by Athrú whiskey, and this was the prize, a mini whiskey cask, as well as some lovely whiskey to fill it. The whiskey is a 6 year old, oloroso sherry aged, single cask, cask strength single malt and it is absolutely delicious! There are a few distilleries or whiskey shops which sell mini barrels or mini whiskey barrel kits, where they give you an unaged spirit, so you can explore aging a whiskey at home. Our plan is to give the already-aged whiskey an extra few weeks in the mini barrel to double down on that delicious sherry influence before emptying most of it and refilling the barrel with some more basic whiskey, to see if we can make that whiskey better!
