DIY series make your own bike tools. I show how to remove a freewheel without the special tool. Using a automotive lugnut of the correct size or a simple bolt. How to remove cassette without tool click here: • Remove cassette lock ring without tool no ... How to remove free hub click here : • Remove free hub SRAM 9 speed cassette shim... When purchasing the lugnut pay close attention to the "HEX" size,(usually in fine print on reverse of package) you must get the 13/16 HEX size! The M14x1.5 listed on the front of the package is MEANINGLESS as almost every lugnut on the market is that thread size. And it stands for the thread size inside the lugnut. What is actually relevant is the HEX size which is the outside size of the lugnut and its length. the lugnut used in the video is model: mcgard 64021 HEX 13/16 X 1.945 INCHES which is listed on the back of the package in fine print. Also keep in mind hex of 21mm is larger then hex 13/16 and will probably have to be grinded down so dont buy it. The bolt used in the video is 15/16 hex (23.5mm)x 2 3/8 inches long and required extensive grinding. The freewheels shown in the video are SUNRUN, DNP epoch LY-1007KF and a unmarked freewheel. This will work for almost all other freewheels such as falcon, shimano, sunrace ect as all have similar size removal tools. After re-installing the freewheel it is not necessary to use a tool to tighten it. just hand tighten it, as the act of pedaling will tighten the freewheel further. Also never use ratcheting socket wrenches while removing freewheels. Even a 1/2 inch socket wrench could break with the amount of force required. you could injure yourself if the socket wrench shears. Use only quality forged box wrench as shown in the video, And be careful using an adjustable wrench as they are supposedly not as strong as a normal wrench.
