Old-world ryokan charm meets nostalgic winter magic. ❄️♨️ 「元湯孫九郎 Motoyu Magokuro」 — a historic Okuhida onsen ryokan (est. 1878) with just 24 rooms, blending timber warmth with modern comfort. The lobby displays adorable signatures & sketches from a very famous animator, Hayao Miyazaki (hello, Ghibli vibes). ✨ Our little story: We arrived early in gentle snowfall. Staff guided our parking, wiped our suitcase wheels, and welcomed us with hot tea in the main hall. After check-in, we chose dinner & breakfast times and learned the onsen rules: reserve-only private baths (indoor & outdoor) plus gender-separated public baths—and yes, there’s a rare spring-water spout by the public bath that you can sip. The outdoor rotenburo under snow was pure silence. The corridor to our room opened to a glass wall of white mountains. Before dinner, we melted into the Paragon music room—big vintage speakers, soft jazz, shelves of books, just us and time. Dinner was kaiseki; I added a Hida steak for Zaw’s birthday and a tiny candle appeared at the end. Then a snack run at the lobby shop, birthday pudding, and a lazy tatami flop with YouTube. Morning soak, comfort breakfast (rice/porridge with miso salmon), and a warm goodbye—handwritten note + in-house snacks that made us leaving hard. Nostalgic, spotless, and kind.
