In a Fantasy World, What Would Make the Most Practical Sense?

If you had to fight goblins, trolls, ogres, and even just other humans, in a fantasy setting like DnD for instance, what would be some reasonable choices in weapons? And if there is a vast arsenal of options inspired by many real-life historical eras, why would anyone bother with design from an earlier stage in the evolution of arms and armor? Is choosing between a Bronze Age or Viking Age sword and a Renaissance basket-hilt even really much of a choice, or more like a no-brainer? I dicussed this with Matt Easton @scholagladiatoria while hanging out at his place, and it was quite a fun topic to nerd out about.
