Restoring the steering column splines on a Ford Thunderbird steering box.

Another job to sort out a problem on an old vehicle. A mechanic rebuilding a 1957 Ford Thunderbird brought the steering box & column in to us to see if we could get them to fit together. His customer had got the box rebuilt but whoever had done it managed to damage the splined shaft that the steering column fits onto. Seemed to me that too much force had been used to push the splined shaft into the new worm. The end of the shaft was deformed & the shaft was bent... So we cut the damaged end off (about 15mm), recut the chamfer & centre in the end, tried to straighten it in a flypress without damaging the splines, & then did this kind of shaping job in the lathe.
