Often written about and not often enough written by, Native Americans are dispelling the mainstream cultural amnesia that surrounds the West’s first peoples through the genre of memoir. In this panel, hosted by the Association of Writers and Writing Programs (AWP), three distinctive Native memoirists—a rising literary light, an award-winning poet-professor, and a celebrated storyteller and tribal leader—share their journeys navigating Indigenous identity in relation to the land, across continents, and through time. Representing diverse California Indian cultures (from the Karuk, Ohlone Costanoan Esselen, Coast Miwok and Southern Pomo tribes), event participants will share lesser-known stories, mores, and challenges of being Indigenous in US society and their approaches to making those experiences legible through memoir. This talk, like their works, pushes back against prevailing narratives of erasure to center the diverse experiences of Native California. Event participants include Ursula Pike, author of 𝘼𝙣 𝙄𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙖𝙣 𝙖𝙢𝙤𝙣𝙜 𝙡𝙤𝙨 𝙄𝙣𝙙𝙞́𝙜𝙚𝙣𝙖𝙨: 𝘼 𝙉𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙏𝙧𝙖𝙫𝙚𝙡 𝙈𝙚𝙢𝙤𝙞𝙧, winner of the 2019 Writers’ League of Texas Manuscript Contest; Deborah A.
