Short black-and-white excerpt from a French TV report featuring Belgian violinist Arthur Grumiaux visiting master luthier Étienne Vatelot in his Paris workshop. This carefully remastered clip improves clarity and presence while preserving the grain and atmosphere of the original film. Grumiaux has come to see Vatelot after a seam on his violin has opened – a delicate “décollage” that requires the violin to be inspected and carefully re-glued. We see the instrument on the workbench, the luthier examining the ribs and table, and the quiet, concentrated dialogue between player and maker about sound, response and long-term stability. At the end of the sequence, Grumiaux takes the violin in hand again and tests it by playing the opening bars of a Mozart violin sonata, listening to the focus, projection and balance of the sound in the intimate acoustic of the atelier. This short scene offers a rare, behind-the-scenes glimpse of one of the 20th century’s greatest violinists working with one of its most respected luthiers in the famous Paris workshop.
