Serendipity (AP001N) – A handcrafted Briar Burl Herb Pipe for use with the Neo by Prrl Labs, This piece is a custom commission, the customer participated in the design process, selecting raw materials and influencing design elements. The request included a dramatic Pipe and a bespoke pipe stand. This video will allow the customer to view the results in detail prior to finalizing the transaction. ** Spoiler Alert** Sold 2/20/2023 The following are excerpts from the specific requests by the customer: • a Neo pipe and a stand that holds the Neo on its side • I'd like a small well in the stand for dumping ABV • Preferably the pipe and stand would have a lot of rustication and/or live edges and asymmetry -- the wilder the better. For the pipe I see a chunky heavy shape carved to ergonomically fit in the left hand that will stand on its own when put down away from the stand • I'd like the bowl to be "beefy". A medium reddish brown color sounds nice • something carved specifically to fit easily in the left hand • Hopefully you can configure the stand so it sits with the bowl relatively close to level and stable -- I'd like to be able to fill the bowl while the pipe is on the stand • I think the live edge on top of the pipe would be very cool. For the stem I really like the swirl acrylics. • picture the bowl end of the pipe as a ball of Play-doh that you gently squeeze until it becomes fitted to your hand. Just a general shape though - not shaped to the individual fingers. You mentioned rounding the bottom of the bowl -- that's fine as long as the fat middle and upper parts are ergonomic. • I'd like the stain to be very warm and reddish -- fiery highlights with reds and oranges if possible. • To recap some parameters for the stand: a small well for ABV, and provision for the Neo to lay on its side rather than on end. Holds the pipe with the bowl level-ish and stable for loading. Project Details: • The Briar Burl block weighed 500+ grams prior to start. Final weight of Pipe with mouthpiece is 170 grams. Two thirds of the material was removed during carving. • A bold shape with Live-edge inclusion at the top of the bowl. You don’t have to hold this pipe. This pipe holds you. • There are some minor voids in the block of briar (Bottom, top of shank and through live-edge top). These natural flaws will not interfere with the function of the pipe and lend a naturalized element to the pipe. • I attempted (and think I succeeded) in a “Reflective Reverse Sunburst” stain job using Black, Dark Red, Orange and Yellow leather stains. The guitar-inspired stain transitions from red to orange to yellow to orange to red. • The mouthpiece was made from scratch from Black Swirl Acrylic, with large, comfortable button and bent to the same plane as the top of the herb chamber. • Two handmade Briar Burl stirring tools are included: one with matching sunburst stain and one natural with live-edge inclusion. The primitive stand is fashioned from Walnut Root and features: o Pipe well o Flower Tray o Stirring tool holder o Horizontal hidey-hole for Neo o ABV well with large landing/inspection area and removable, glass receptacle o Sanded to a medium finish and conditioned with mineral oil. Also included in the package: o Handmade flannel bag with handmade polished stone cinch o Care and Cleaning kit o Glass funnel for filling o Stainless steel screens o A variety of silicone gaskets (red and white) o Silicone and felt pads for bottom of stand and/or pipe well. One final note: This is the first Pipe with the designation of “Artisan Pipe”. I have decided to create a new classification for projects with higher than average ambitions and results. I will continue to make “Pipes” and “Artisan Pipes” in the future with the “AP” designation reserved for the best of the best. This project was a pleasure and a challenge.
