Rapsodia per trombone, pianoforte e percussioni Miklós Kocsár (1933-2019) David Jackson, trombone; Ian Antonio, percussion; Matthew Bengtson, piano Michigan Recording Project Recorded May 2023 Miklós Kocsár (1933-2019) was one of the leading Hungarian composers of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, a professor of composition and theory at the Bartók conservatory in Budapest and recipient of the Erkel prize. Choral music ranks prominently among his compositional output. Rapsodia adds piano and percussion to a solo trombone to create a powerful, mystically dark musical landscape. The rhythms in the piece are written “in space” without meter or barlines, leaving much interpretive latitude to the performers. The work is in several clearly defined sections, building to an impressive climactic moment, followed by a spacious, elegiac Coda. The unique resonances of this powerful trio combine most effectively to make a strong emotional impact on the listener.
