Dhrupad’s origin is thought to be in the recitation of the Samveda. The Maestros of Dhrupad remark that rather than entertaining an audience, Dhrupad’s purpose is a form of worship, in which offerings are made to the divine through sound or nada. Dhrupad can be seen at different levels as a meditation, a mantric recitation, worship, a yoga or tantra based on the knowledge of the Nadis and chakras and also purely as a performing art portraying a universe of human emotions. A 21st generation practitioner of the majestic Dagar lineage, Niloy Ahsan is an unconventional vocalist, mastering a distinctive repertoire, in-depth understanding of Indian music and arts as well as traditional and classical styles of Dhrupad, Dhamar, and Khayal. By integrating the symmetry between the austerity of Dagarvani Dhrupad and the versatile musical possibilities of the Sadharani Geeti, Niloy has emerged as one of the finest and most promising young Dhrupad vocalists of our time. Niloy’s music is exquisite, explosive, and yet soul-searching. He brings about the particular traits of the Raga he sings, along with a blossoming of Bhava and Rasa. Niloy was initiated into music by his father at the age of 4. He has been trained extensively in the Dagar traditions by Padmashree Ustad Wasifuddin Dagar and Padmashree Gundecha Brothers. He has also been trained in the Agra Gharana and Indore-Kirana Gharana Khayal Gayaki. His collaborative work with eminent Western jazz maestros came out as the album 'around silence' in 2013 in London, UK, and 'Dodecameron' in Saint Petersburg, Russia. In October 2021 he was invited by the legendary composer A. R. Rahman to collaborate with Firdaus Orchestra in Expo 2020 in Dubai, UAE. Roman Das is a disciple of Pakhawaj Artist Pandit Akhilesh Gundecha. At the same time, he has learned Dhrupad Vocal from Padmashree Gundecha Brothers. That’s how he brings out the magic and soul through his Pakhawaj stroke.
