WATCH LIVE: US Senate Convenes as Government Shutdown Breaks Record for Longest in US History | CNBC TV18 Senator John Cornyn, Republican of Texas, arrived to cheers in the chamber and voted. The Senate voted, 60 to 40, to advance consideration of the spending measure. The Senate voted 60-40 to break a Democratic filibuster on government funding legislation in a key step toward reopening the government. Democratic Sens. Catherine Cortez Masto, Dick Durbin, John Fetterman, Tim Kaine, Maggie Hassan, Jacky Rosen, Jeanne Shaheen and independent Sen. Angus King voted to advance the package. Senators finally broke the gridlock that has roiled the chamber for five weeks after eight Senate Democrats agreed to a deal that included a later vote on extending health care subsidies — which had been on the table for weeks — as well as assurances that federal workers laid off during the shutdown would be brought back on. WASHINGTON DC - U.S. Senate opens rare Sunday session amid longest government shutdown in history. The Senate is voting now to break a Democratic filibuster on government funding legislation in a key step toward reopening the government. The vote comes after a critical group of at least eight Senate Democratic centrists reached a deal with Senate GOP leaders and the White House to reopen the government in exchange for a future vote on extending enhanced Affordable Care subsidies, according to two people familiar with the discussions. The Senate will reconvene this afternoon for a rare Sunday session aimed at ending the government shutdown, although there are few signs of an imminent breakthrough. Senate Republicans will gather for a conference meeting before the chamber convenes at 1:30 p.m., with no votes currently scheduled. Senate Majority Leader John Thune told reporters that the chamber will continue meeting until the government reopens. Senators are working on finalizing the text of a package of three long-term appropriations bills that would be part of the GOP plan to end the impasse. Thune is pursuing a strategy that would involve voting to advance the House-passed continuing resolution and amending it to include the appropriations package — known as a "minibus" — as well as a longer extension of government funding. A vote to begin that process could come Sunday. Earlier today, Trump defended his tariff policy on Truth Social. “So, let’s get this straight??? The President of the United States is allowed (and fully approved by Congress!) to stop ALL TRADE with a Foreign Country … but is not allowed to put a simple Tariff on a Foreign Country, even for purposes of NATIONAL SECURITY. That is NOT what our great Founders had in mind!” In a separate post, Trump said those who are against tariffs “are FOOLS!” the president posted. Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina predicted that bipartisan negotiations on funding the government could have a “breakthrough” today because he thinks the strain of the record-breaking shutdown is “backfiring” on Democrats. #usgovernment #ussenate #TRUMP #democrats #uspolitics #mikejohnson #johnthune #cnbctv18
