Blepharitis is a very common condition in which the eyelids become inflamed. The symptoms of blepharitis are very similar to those of a dry eye: the eyes can be red and uncomfortable, and you may get crusts on your eyelashes that look quite similar to dandruff. Blepharitis may be caused by infection from bacteria which can be treated by lid hygiene - dipping a cotton wool bud into a diluted solution of baby shampoo and gently scrubbing the eyelashes to remove any crusts and bacteria. The second cause of blepharitis is a change to the natural oil in your tears. If this oil is too thick and is not being secreted properly, it can result in blepharitis. We usually treat this using hot compresses. You may also benefit from lid hygiene. Most blepharitis sufferers will find it useful to use artificial tears or lubricating eye drops for better eye comfort. If you suffer from any of these symptoms, it is wise to have your eyes examined by an optometrist who will recommend the appropriate treatment. Specsaver's qualified optometrists are on hand to answer any of your questions of eye health. Find out more.
