Like most historical mines, the Coniston copper mines saw numerous accidents and fatalities over the centuries. Working underground in the 18th and 19th centuries was extremely dangerous, and safety standards were minimal by modern comparison. The Coniston Copper Mines were a sprawling network of tunnels, some extending hundreds of meters underground, often poorly ventilated and lit only by candles. Accidents were common — from falls, rock collapses, and flooding, to explosions caused by early gunpowder blasting. The mines were also prone to poisonous gases and bad air (“foul damp”), which could suffocate miners. The men who worked there were mostly local villagers or farmers supplementing their income in winter. Boys as young as 10 or 12 worked in the mines, carrying ore or operating machinery on the surface. Wives and children sometimes worked sorting ore at the “dressing floors.” Th old man of Coniston is a mountain overlooking the mines and stands at 2634 feet making it the 13th highest Wainwright. #uk #4k #lakedistrict #hiking #mining
