A historic recording of Henan zhuizi (河南坠子), a genre of traditional accompanied narrative singing from Henan province (河南省), central China. The leading performer is Ms. Qiao Qingxiu (乔清秀, 1910-1944 or 1943), and her accompanist, playing the zhuihu (坠胡), also known as zhuiqin (坠琴) or zhuizi (坠子), is probably Mr. Kang Yuanlin (康元林, nicknamed Wacha 瓦碴, 1900-1965). The story being performed here is entitled "Lan Qiao Hui"《蓝桥会》(Rendezvous at Orchid Bridge). Probably recorded in Shanghai, China in June 1935, during the Republic period, and released on both sides of an 78-rpm record by Victor Records (Chinese: Shengli Changpian, 胜利唱片), catalog number 54765. Qiao Qingxiu was born Yuan Jinxiu (袁金秀) in Dianji Village (店集村), Mashang Township (马上乡), Neihuang County (内黄县), Anyang (安阳市), northern Henan province (河南省), central China, bordering Hebei province to the north. In 1923, she learned to perform Henan zhuizi from Qiao Liyuan (乔利元, 1898-1940 or 1939 or 1941), adopting the stage name Qiao Qingxiu. In 1925 she began touring to such cities as Handan, Xingtai, and Linqing. In 1926 Qiao Qingxiu married Qiao Liyuan, who was 12 years her senior, and in 1927 they had a daughter, who Qiao Liyuan named Xiaoqiao (小巧). Also in 1927, Qiao Liyuan invited the zhuiqin (坠琴) player Kang Yuanlin (康元林, nicknamed Wacha 瓦碴, 1900-1965) to become Qiao Qingxiu's primary accompanist, and they performed in Anyang, Xingtai, Shijiazhuang, Baoding, and other places, where they were well received. In 1928 Qiao Qingxiu began learning lihua dagu (梨花大鼓), a genre of narrative singing from southern Hebei province, with Pan Chunju (潘春聚) as her teacher. In 1929 she was invited to Tianjin to perform at the Yu Ming Chun Teahouse (玉茗春茶楼), her talents attracting a lot of attention. In 1934 her daughter Xiaoqiao fell ill due to a delay in treatment and died. In she June 1935 Qiao and her husband traveled to Shanghai to record eleven 78-rpm records for Victor Records (胜利唱片), and from then on the couple became famous in Beijing and Tianjin, with "Qiao school zhuizi" (乔派坠子) being recognized as its own genre of narrative singing. In 1937 Qiao Qingxiu was invited to perform at the Ming Feng Teahouse (鸣风茶社) in Nanjing, and recorded five more records. In 1938 she was invited to share the stage with the renowned Jingyun dagu performer Luo Yusheng (骆玉笙, 1914-2002). In 1939 her health deteriorated and she traveled with her family to Shenyang to obtain treatment for her liver disease. By 1940 she and her husband were persecuted by officials of the Manchukuo puppet state due to suspicions that they were agents of the Chinese Communist Party; her husband was tortured to death by Japanese military police, and this incident caused her to begin to suffer from schizophrenia. In the winter of 1941, Qiao returned to Tianjin in disguise, and in 1942, in order to repay old debts, she successively appeared at the Xiao Li Yuan (小梨园), Da Guan Yuan (大观园), and other Tianjin teahouses, and was invited to perform in Beijing. But then her condition suddenly deteriorated and she became bedridden, eventually dying due to inadequate treatment on March 7, 1944. Qiao Qingxiu's life was adapted into a 1996 Chinese TV series entitled "Zhuizi Huanghou"《坠子皇后》(The Empress of Zhuizi). In 2006 the tradition of Henan zhuizi was included in the First Batch of 518 traditions inscribed in the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of China (第一批国家级非物质文化遗产名录) by China's Ministry of Culture (中华人民共和国文化部, known since March 2018 as the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, 中华人民共和国文化和旅游部). The sub-agencies responsible for maintaining these lists, both under the aegis of the aforementioned ministry, are the Department of Intangible Cultural Heritage (文化部非物质文化遗产司) and the China Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Center (中国非物质文化遗产保护中心, CICHPC). Additionally, in 2007 Henan zhuizi was included in the First Batch of the Henan Province Province-Level Intangible Cultural Heritage List
