Absolutely epic day of kayak fishing in magical Maui waters! The target bait (opelu / mackerel scad) was hard to come by and all I managed to pick up were sardines, which are all but impossible to keep alive while kayak fishing. Knowing that I likely only had dead bait to work with, I decided to go deep and target the bottom. Conditions started out close to perfect, but when you are kayak fishing in Hawaii, you know that doesn’t last long, which meant the wind did eventually find us. Nothing calms down questionable conditions like hot fishing! While on the way out to the fishing grounds I quickly took a strike, but a shark decided I needed to pay my taxes. With that out of the way, I had my fingers crossed that I would keep the rest of my earnings from this trip. Once in our target area, it did not take long for my plan on fishing deep to prove itself. A smaller uku (green jobfish / grey snapper) couldn’t resist a free snack. Shortly after getting him on the deck, another rod bent over. This time it was a kamanu (rainbow runner). Not a big one, but they are a beautiful fish and taste even better than they look. The day wasn’t done as another deep bait rod started screaming off line. This fish had a bit more weight to it and put up a heck of a fight. It was another uku, which is always welcome. If you haven’t tried one, they are one of the best eating fish out here. Once I had the third fish in the bag the wind and waves started to pick up, so I had decided to head back to shore, but the ocean had a different plan for me. Before I got my last bait up, the line started to peel off my reel! It didn’t take long to realize that this was a sea monster. After a long battle, I finally was able to drag a dozer kahala (amberjack) on board. This isn’t a fish that we really keep in Hawaiian waters, but it was still an epic fight. By the time the ordeal was over, the weather was on me. Nothing too horrible, but some bigger waves made my life interesting during the 4 mile peddle back to shore. The story does not end once back on land though, with so much tasty fish we had to do a catch & cook. At home the first batch of fish was fried up with a simple egg wash dip, bread crumb and seasoning. The next round was cut into fillets and pan sautéed with butter and garlic, put on a bed of basmati ginger rice and spicey bok choy. Once plated a drizzle of lemon, butter caper sauce finished things off. Let’s just say it is worth making again! Hope you enjoyed the episode and remember… GO BIG, GO HOME or GO HOME WITH SOMETHING BIG!
