Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord is one of the founding games for the dungeon crawling genre and it is wildly impressive how well it holds up. This is a general review of the game as well as a recounting of my experience within it and the dynamic story that arose from a game made all the way back in 1981. Wizardry is still often emulated today and has spawned entire franchises that copy its formula very closely like Etrian Odyssey, and Acquire’s Dungeon Crawlers like Undernauts: Labyrinth of Yomi. But its impression on culture can even be seen in things like the anime Dungeon Meshi Delicious in Dungeon. Many tropes we see, especially in Japan where the series really took off, start here in this original game.
