Grosmont, Skenfrith, and White Castle which together formed a strategic Norman defensive triangle established around the 1070s to protect the route to Hereford Likely commissioned by William fitz Osbern, Earl of Hereford, shortly after the 1066 Norman Conquest their purpose was to subdue the rebellious and troublesome Welsh. In 1135, King Stephen brought the three sites together to form a unified defensive lordship, which later became a key stronghold under royal control. The castles saw action during the 13th-century border conflicts and the 15th-century Owain Glyndŵr uprising. By the 16th century, they were largely abandoned and fell into ruin.
