Hi everyone! My name is Dan, and I am a veterinarian. Today I am talking about when to remove puppy teeth in a dog. Puppy teeth can be removed or extracted for many different reasons. I will cover the two most common reasons to have puppy teeth today. The most common reason to remove a puppy tooth is when the adult teeth does not cause the puppy tooth to fall out of the dog's mouth. This leads to both teeth being in the mouth causing malocclusion and excessive dental tartar and calculus on the adult tooth. It may also cause the adult dog tooth to come in incorrectly. The tooth can be pulled by a veterinarian with the dog under anesthesia. The second reason would be if the lower jaw is too short. If the lower jaw is too short, the puppy teeth may be preventing the low jaw or mandible from catching up with the upper jaw. A veterinarian can remove or extract puppy teeth to allow for the shorter jaw to catch up with the normal length jaw. Remember that puppies develop really quickly, so always talk with your veterinarian about your dog oral health. This is a tight time frame to correct puppy problems like this.
