This edition takes us on a journey back in time, to the years 1977 and 1983. Our first stop is with Roy Cousins, a multifaceted talent who has excelled as a producer, artist, writer, and label owner. Cousins began his musical journey in the early 1960s, achieving notable success with his group The Royals, particularly with their hit song Pick Up the Pieces. By the late 1970s, he had transitioned primarily to a producer role, working with renowned artists such as Don Carlos, Winston Jarrett, Charlie Chaplin, and Earl Sixteen. He frequently collaborated with the Roots Radics and enlisted the talents of Scientist for mixing duties. Since the 1980s, Cousins has been based in the UK, where he continues to produce music. The track Unity Is Strength is a powerful roots collaboration between Charlie Chaplin and Don Carlos, released by UK's CSA Records, a label known for its high-quality releases in the 1980s. Charlie "The Principal" Chaplin, renowned for his socially conscious lyrics, distinguished himself from the more sexually explicit content prevalent in mainstream reggae music. While he continued to release music after the 1980s, his profile gradually diminished. Don Carlos, a former member of Black Uhuru, has enjoyed a prolific career spanning over 50 years. Together with Goldie, his sidekick, co-writer and background singer, he has released several successful albums. As a solo artist, Don Carlos continues to captivate audiences worldwide, particularly in Africa, where he has a dedicated fanbase. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A. Culture & Ranking Joe - Bald Head Bridge B. The Mighty Two - Babylon Bridge Label: Errol T Records This edition also delves into 1977, a year overflowing with reggae gems. Think Culture's Two Sevens Clash, King Tubby/Augustus Pablo's King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown, the Congos with Heart of the Congos, Junior Murvin's iconic Police & Thieves, and Black Uhuru's debut set Love Crisis. This 12" single features Joseph Hill and his collective, laying down a powerful roots track based on the English nursery rhyme London Bridge Is Falling Down. The song features a wicked toast by the deejay Ranking Joe, adding another layer of energy. Culture, spearheaded by the visionary Joseph Hill, a former member of Studio One's Soul Defenders, blossomed into an internationally respected group. The band wasn't immune to changes - breakups, reunions, and personnel shifts occurred. However, Joseph Hill remained the constant thread, Culture's heart and soul for many years. The original Culture sadly came to an end in 2006 with Joseph Hill's sudden passing. Thankfully, his legacy continues through his son, Kenyatta Hill, who stepped into his father's shoes. To this day, Culture continues to be spoken of with the utmost respect and admiration. The deejay Ranking Joe, originally known as Little Joe, made his name on Jamaica's sound system circuit, renowned for his rapid-fire toasting style. While he released several notable albums and actively produced music, his primary focus remained on the sound system scene. His dedication to reggae is evident in his recent release of a new album. The 12" single was produced by the legendary duo of Joe Gibbs and Errol Thompson, often referred to as The Mighty Two. Their collaboration resulted in a vast collection of influential music, which continues to be reissued and celebrated today. [All tracks were ripped straight from vinyl using SoundForge.
