Health Canada approves AstraZeneca, Serum Institute of India's COVID-19 vaccines | FULL

Dr. Supriya Sharma, Health Canada’s chief medical advisor, announced on Friday the approval of both AstraZeneca’s and Serum Institute of India’s COVID-19 vaccine candidates, making them the third and fourth vaccine candidates to be approved in Canada. Both approved vaccines require two doses. The second dose is to be given after four to twelve weeks from the first. The newly-approved vaccines are viral vector-based vaccines, while the previous Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are mRNA-based. AstraZeneca’s vaccine proved to be 62 per cent effective in clinical trials, less than Pfizer’s and Moderna’s. But it only needs to be stored at a temperature between two to eight degrees Celsius, making it easier to be distributed.
