Perhaps the wildest multiverse proposal ever suggested, this episode examines Max Tegmark's Level IV Mathematical Multiverse, which claims that every consistent mathematical structure exists as a real universe. It is the most radical attempt to explain why our universe has the laws it does without appealing to an intelligent cause. The Mathematical Multiverse is supposed to answer the question of why the laws of nature are so precise and so well-suited to producing an ordered universe. The problem is that it raises a deeper difficulty. If every mathematical possibility exists, how do we make sense of typicality or probability at all? This takes the usual multiverse measure problem and elevates it into what we call the meta measure problem. Any attempt to assign weights to infinitely many mathematical structures quickly collapses into a paradox. In this episode, we explain what the Mathematical Multiverse claims, how it tries to address fine-tuning, why the standard measure problem already undermines many multiverse explanations, and why the meta measure problem poses an even more serious challenge. We argue that this ultimate multiverse proposal does not provide a coherent or scientific explanation for the laws of nature.
