Part of the patients was evaluated at the Hospital das Clínicas of the Medical School of Ribeirão Preto. Professor Justine Smith of the School of Medicine and Public Health at Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia, one of the authors of the study, says that syphilis is resurgent, especially in industrialized countries like Brazil. "Doctors were no longer accustomed to seeing syphilis, and if it is not detected early, it can bring serious complications and affect vision," says Justine.
