In this documentary, Amal shares her journey as a former high school student preparing to pursue undergraduate studies in biochemistry with a focus in neuroscience at Columbia University. Her interest was shaped by firsthand experiences with mental health and the stigma surrounding it within her East African community. By seeking opportunities beyond her school, including laboratory research, mentorship, and national programs, Amal demonstrates the power of initiative and persistence. Her story shows that limited access does not define potential, and that rejection does not determine outcomes. Amal’s academic path was not without setbacks. Despite an initial rejection from the University of Chicago, her persistence paid off when she was accepted to Columbia University with a full academic scholarship, underscoring the value of resilience, initiative, and long-term commitment to her goals. This documentary is intended to inspire young and non-traditional students, particularly those from underrepresented or uncertain academic backgrounds, to see themselves in neuroscience and to believe that their experiences can be a strength, not a barrier.
