DERRY, NH - Derry Fire Emergency Communications Division received multiple 911 calls reporting a Brush Fire Fordway Extension Wednesday just before 1 p.m. Shortly after, additional 911 calls were received for an additional brush fire on Interstate 93 in Windham. Fire apparatus from Derry and Windham were dispatched, including Derry Engine 1, Foresty 3, Ladder 3, and Car 1 (Battalion Chief) to the Fordway Extension and a Windham engine and tanker to I-93. Due to heavy fire, windy conditions, and the need for water supply, the Fordway Extension call escalated to 3 alarms. Crews were assisted by Atkinson, Auburn, Bedford, Candia, Chester, Hampstead, Hudson, Hooksett, Londonderry, Manchester, Pelham, Pembroke, Plaistow, Raymond, Salem, Sandown, AMR ambulance, Derry Police, NH State Police, NH DOT, Southern NH Regional HAZMAT, NH Division of Forests and Lands, Derry DPW and the Derry CERT. In total, over 35 apparatus and more than 50 personnel responded. A drone team provided aerial thermal images to assist the crews in locating the hotspots. Companies at the Fordway Extension fire scene stretched hose lines and used hand tools and chainsaws to fight the multi-acre fire between the Fordway Extension and a walking trail through the conservation land. The fire on I-93 was brought under control by Windham and Derry Fire. There were no civilians injured. One firefighter received a minor injury and could immediately return to work. The Derry Fire Communications Division and our mutual aid partners handled multiple other emergency incidents during this incident. High winds are anticipated for Thursday. There is no open burning permitted townwide. The fire remains under investigation by the Derry Fire Marshal. Overnight, crews will monitor the incident scene to ensure the fire remains fully extinguished. ©Jeffrey Hastings www.frameofmindphoto.com/news
