Countries sending help to India amid the devastating COVID surge

On Monday, April 26th, the COVID pandemic is still raging across India. The country reported a record jump in infections and fatalities for a fifth straight day on Monday, with 352,991 new cases and at least 2,812 deaths. Signs that the country is cracking under the strain are legion. There are national shortages of vaccine stocks, hospital beds, oxygen supplies and even hearses. Crematoria are breaking down under the sheer numbers of bodies they have to deal with. It was reported that the reported numbers in cases and deaths in India are far lower than reality, according to health experts. Over the last weekend, the US was set to help India with the disastrous COVID outbreaks. Last Sunday, The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said the country was sending 600 pieces of medical equipment including ventilators to India to help in its fight against the pandemic. The first of nine plane-loads of kit would arrive in New Delhi on Tuesday. World Health Organization Director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned about the global pandemic during the Monday press briefing. On the same day, German Chancellor Angela Merkel reiterated that the country would do everything to help India. With help on the way, top Indian health officials on Monday appealed to people not to “panic” and insisted the government was doing all it could to provide much-needed oxygen to COVID-19 patients around the country. Right now, the Indian government has ordered all industries to divert supplies for medical use.
