Dr Jawed Qureshi covers determinate and indeterminate structures. • structural mechanics Determinate and indeterminate structures differ primarily in their load carrying abilities and support conditions. What makes a structure determinate is that it can be analysed using static equilibrium equations alone, thanks to clearly defined support conditions and the absence of redundant members or reactions. Indeterminate structures, on the other hand, possess more supports or redundant members than necessary, demanding advanced analysis techniques like the force or stiffness method to solve for unknown forces and reactions. Recognising what makes a structure determinate or indeterminate is crucial in structural engineering, as it determines the complexity of analysis and design, impacting safety and efficiency.
