Ring of Honor shocked the wrestling world Wednesday when it announced it would be going on hiatus, and promptly released its entire roster. ROH has gone on to put its tape library up for sale. There's a lot to unpack here, and while I do hope and feel that Ring of Honor will be back better than ever, let's take a moment to celebrate the success that was and IS ROH. Ring of Honor's influence on Modern-Day pro wrestling is undeniable. Without ROH, we wouldn't have Samoa Joe, CM Punk, Bryan Danielson and what ended up being known as The Reality Era in WWE, when smaller stars once dismissed as too Indie got to shine on the biggest stages that pro wrestling had to offer. ROH did that, and their influence on the wrestling business is more profound than anybody will ever know, even to this day. Just look at some of the recent free agent signees in AEW, and who is rumored to show up in the company when their contract is up. It's basically an ROH reunion show. Remember, it was ROH that essentially showed The EVPs the ropes as The Young Bucks and Cody Rhodes bet on themselves and filled a 10,000-seat arena. It's easy to forget now, but while this was the precursor to AEW, that was an Ring of Honor show. With ROH production. And they essentially did it out of the goodness of their hearts, without any assurances that Cody or The Young Bucks would sign a long-term deal with the company. As a human being, this makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside, but as a Business Economics Major with an Emphasis in Accounting at UC Santa Barbara (Ole!) I cringe a little bit thinking about this. With a little more paperwork, a little more hardball and contractual cynicism. With ROH maybe working out a deal that the only way they help The Young Bucks and Cody Rhodes produce All In is if they sign some type of non-compete clause that would prohibit them from starting their own wrestling company. Maybe, just maybe, there is no AEW. Tony Khan isn't able to swoop in and sign all the hottest free agents in a packaged deal. And maybe we're talking about ROH and Sinclair Broadcasting Challenging WWE in the Pro Wrestling Wars. It's a fascinating What If, especially considering the current struggles of a post-pandemic ROH. With ROH now on hiatus, pro wrestling free agency is saturated like never before. In addition to WWE's mass releases, and COVID wiping out scores of independent wrestling promotions, the supply of pro wrestlers vastly outweighs the demand. AEW has remained aggressive in signing free agents, but with CM Punk and Bryan Danielson now signed to expensive contracts on an already crowded roster, they'll only be able to take on so many more. WWE is being very stingy with free agents as it continues cost-cutting and may or may not be setting up for a future sale. The harsh reality is a lot of these talented athletes will not be able to find a new home on the current pro wrestling scene. And just like The Young Bucks and Cody Rhodes started their own shop, I'd love to see that same entrepreneurial spirit among pro wrestling's Black free agents in the form of a Black-owned Predominately Black Wrestling Promotion. I want these brothers and sisters to do whatever is right for themselves and their families. It's easy for me to sit here and issue a call to action for a Black wrestling promotion from the outside looking in, so by no means is this a mandate of what they have to do. It's more of a pipe dream. But it's a fairly realistic one to me. AEW could be a landing spot for Black free agents, but I just don't trust AEW with Black talent at the moment. AEW's top stars are predominately white, and their world title reigns very long, 263 days to be exact. If you look at who has been developed and is waiting in the wings for a world title run, from MJF, Adam Cole, Hangman Adam Page, Darby Allin, Bryan Danielson and CM Punk, it could be years if not decades before that title even touches melanin. Throw in the fact that no Black top stars have really been developed just yet in Jacksonville , and Black talent are currently on the outside of AEW's star-making cycle waiting their turn.
