On May 26th, the Gokusui no En (Floating Poetry Festival) was held at Motsu-ji. This festival can also be called 'Kyokusui no En' but in Hiraizumi, the pronunciation follows the Yusoku-kojitsu (the study of traditional codes for aristocratic and samurai families). The Gokusui no En is an aristocratic entertainment that was enjoyed in the Nara and Heian eras. The participants compose a traditional waka poem on a set theme before small boats called usho float by them on the stream (Yarimizu) that feeds water into the pond. The usho, decoratively shaped like mandarin ducks and lotus leaves, carry cups of sake. The Yarimizu beside which the festival is held, represents a twisting river flowing through a plain, and the pond into which it flows is an ocean. The Yarimizu was discovered during excavations in 1983 and subsequently restored. The first Gokusui no En was held 3 years later on the occasion of the 800th anniversary memorial service for third Fujiwara lord Hidehira. This year was the 27th time the festival has been held. This year's theme was 'Ayumi' (Walking on). It was chosen in the hope of moving towards recovery, step by step, after the disaster of 2011. An Ennen no Mai (Longevity Dance), designated an Intangible Important Folk Cultural Asset, was also performed, lending an air of profundity. The refined atmosphere of the Heian era was recreated by this festival. On May 26th 'Gokusui no En' was held at Motsu-ji. It was the 27th time this festival, that recreates a Heian era aristocratic entertainment had been held. The participants composed traditional waka poems on this year's theme 'Ayumi' (Walking on).
