Ava has speech apraxia. If you watch the first 20 seconds of this clip and stop--what words do you understand? I'll tell you what happened here. I heard some familiar words. you phone. I saw her sign doctor. and verbally heard her say you hurt. I was completely wrong. But luckily, I didn't "assume" to know what she was saying. I tried to not to say "you need to tell me on your iPad". I tried to just give her feedback that I didn't understand--so that she would get her device on her own--it worked. I also gave her time to get the message out. After she used her AAC to repair what she was trying to say, I expanded that sentence--checking with her to make sure I had it right. What a surprise! Watch all the way to the end because it was not what I thought. Ava's AAC helps her in so many ways--repairing communication is just one of the great benefits of AAC!
