Professor Brian Davies, Emeritus Professor of Medical Robotics at Imperial College London will discuss his personal experiences of surgery in developing cost-effective orthopaedic robot systems and suggest some of the ways that these can be made more effective. This will be discussed in the context of the international development of orthopaedic robots. In addition, he will cover some of the mistakes that he made and cover how the whole area has developed over the years and suggest improvements. He will discuss his experience in setting up the Acrobot Company Ltd and its development that led to many patients benefiting from the system before the company was sold. He will also go into some detail about the Signature Robot Ltd, a new spin-off company which he started in 2018. The Signature robot utilises a patented small, low-force 3 axes powered system. This adopts a cooperative or “fingers on” control approach which is sensitive to small motions. This is in contrast with the more usual “hands-on” that requires large motions of the output tool-carrying structure. These movements towards smaller simpler robots in surgery, which tend to be for a small number of applications, will be contrasted with examples of an alternative movement towards more complex and expensive systems that attempt a wide range of robotic surgeries. Speaker: Professor Brian Davies, Emeritus Professor of Medical Robotics, Imperial College London.
