Marriott Interview (1 of 3): The 5 Core Values

Coaching and Training: https://bestofmany.com/ This video is about Marriott's 5 Core Values. Arne Sorenson talks about leadership and values. Knowing these 5 values will hopefully help you to build a better resume - maybe use some keywords too - as well as during the interviews, as you’ll know what the company stands for. We put people first Marriott’s end goal is to deliver a good experience to customers and this strategy was the same since they started. This is how they compete against everyone else for the loyalty of their customers and is the single most important value. The idea is, and I quote: “Take care of associates and they will take care of our customers.” So the main takeaway from this first value is they value very much people skills in their associates, and they are really good at spotting these things. Simply put, for you as an applicant storytelling is the best way that you can make a good impression during the interview. We pursue excellence Excellence at Marriott refers to the ability to please all the various demographics of their customers. And at that level, that is mostly achieved through acquisitions other brands that specialize into evolving the culture of taste. Why is this worth mentioning? Because think about alternative, cheaper, way of achieving excellence: you try you fail you learn and then do it again - all this on the back of the customer. So the highlight here is in the approach. As a candidate, I believe the main takeaway is to be sure that you emphasize you go above and beyond whatever your role may be. We embrace change Embracing change is about Marriott being actively interested in the latest technological advancements - they admit that the most innovation nowadays comes from the tech industry. Again, as for the pursuit of excellence, it doesn’t mean they are trying to copy AirBnB for example - they call it a different experience, however, they like being connected to the technological space - and in fact, the video featuring Arne Sorenson talking about values is one of the most viewed on my leadership series. For an applicant, I believe the safest takeaway from this is open mindedness to new things or trends. We act with integrity Acting with integrity is probably best explained by a leadership trend that CEO Arne Sorenson talk about: people nowadays want to be respected because of their ideas. People want to work for teams that rewards them for their contribution in a personal way: they want to feel empowered to disagree, they want to see that their opinions matter, and essentially want to have an interest in making things better. This is in contrast with the past where there used to be a celebrity CEO that everyone had to follow. People can be successful leaders despite their different personalities. So I guess the main takeaway here is to be yourself, and be confident. [smile] We serve our world “Sprint to serve” is as the name implies to be able to do it as well and fast as possible. And how they achieve it, given they work in so many cultures around the world, is that they decentralize as much as possible by empowering their local partners to come up with ideas. Ownership is a very important quality they’re likely looking for in any associate so be sure to highlight it in your CV and during the interviews.
