Monsanto Company. Alva and Alberta Pilliod, a California couple in their 70s, alleged exposure to Monsanto’s Roundup weed killer caused them to develop non-Hodgkin lymphoma. After approximately 7 weeks of trial proceedings, a California jury rendered a $2.055 billion verdict in favor of the Pilliods, finding that exposure to Roundup causes cancer and that Monsanto (now Bayer) failed to warn consumers of this severe health hazard. Importantly, the jury also found that Monsanto acted with malice, oppression or fraud, and should be punished for its conduct.
