Episode 4 of the XPRIZE Carbon Removal docuseries explores effective land-based solutions for tackling climate change. The Earth's biosphere has quietly regulated our climate for millions of years, with forests, grasslands, and soils playing a crucial role in absorbing and storing carbon. However, deforestation, soil degradation, and ecosystem destruction are weakening these natural defenses. This episode showcases how five XPRIZE Carbon Removal finalist teams are working to restore and enhance these natural systems with groundbreaking land-based solutions. Meet the teams: Applied Carbon: Applied Carbon’s mobile technology converts crop residues into durable biochar on the move and in the field, making the economics work for farmers and our ecosystems. MASH Makes: MASH Makes produces biochar and carbon-rich biofuels from cashew shell waste in India. These biofuels can potentially replace fossil fuels in sectors that are difficult to decarbonize. NetZero: NetZero focuses exclusively on the immense volumes of unused crop residues available in the tropics, and leverages their technology of mid-size, automated, highly optimized, and easily replicable pyrolysis plants. Takachar: Takachar’s mobile system uses pyrolysis to create biochar by heating agricultural biomass waste without oxygen. Vaulted Deep: Vaulted Deep utilizes wet organic waste in their carbon removal solution–including manure and municipal sewage that can be toxic for the environment. Vaulted Deep’s carbon removal solution turns this waste into a carbon-rich slurry, which is then injected deep underground in salt caverns between tiny cracks within the rock.
