History of the Kingdom of Urartu and the Urartians

The Urartu kingdom was a powerful state in the Iron Age, existing from around 850 BCE to 550 BCE in the Armenian Highlands. It was known by many names, including Nairi, Biainili, and Armenia. Urartu was a rival to the Assyrian Empire and stretched from northern Mesopotamia to southern Caucasus, covering present-day Turkish Kurdistan, Nakhchivan, Armenia, and western Iran. The kingdom was eventually weakened by constant wars and was conquered probably by the Medes. The Urartian people and language eventually became part of the Armenian identity, and the memory of Urartu faded and disappeared until its rediscovery in the 19th century.
