We caught up with plant cell microcopist Dr Verena Kriechbaumer to chat about her research and career pathway. Verena uses high-powered electron and confocal microscopes to image organelles within plant cells. A better understanding of these organelles allows scientists to genetically edit and modify the basic workings of the cell with the aim of getting plants to produce different compounds and higher yields for both biophamring and to address food security. 0:00 Introduction 0:17 Microscopy of plant cell organelles 1:24 A career in plant science Speaker profile: Verena is a plant cell biologist and protein biochemist at Oxford Brookes University with expertise in the structure and function of the plant endoplasmic reticulum (ER), membrane proteins and auxin biosynthesis using biochemical techniques as well as high-resolution live cell imaging. She is also the Deputy Director of the Oxford Brookes University Centre for Bioimaging. Filmed at the Gatsby Plant Science Summer School, 2022.
