Wrestling Bios Presents - The Slammy Awards: 1986 - 1997 The Slammy Awards in the WWE seem to come and go, here for a few years and gone for another few years. The purpose of The Slammy Awards was to recognize superstars for their work over the year, but back in the old WWF days, The Slammy Awards were used more as a comedy show, giving out some silly rewards along with having live music at the ceremony. The first Slammy Awards happened in 1986 where the whole ceremony was used to promote and commemorate The Wrestling Album. Along with giving out awards best on performances on the album, guys like Mean Gene Okerlund and The Junkyard Dog took to the stage to sing. The next year, in 1987, the WWF would use the slammys as a way to give recognition for actual in-ring work. The Slammy Awards in 1987 featured Vince McMahon singing "Stand Back", which is just as funny today as it was back then. The Slammy Awards made a return in 1994, 1996 and 1997. While the 1994 Slammy Awards had way too many categories and was only featured on the WWF Mania show, the 96 and 97 Slammy awards aired the night before WrestleMania. These award shows were used more as a vehicle to promote the next night's big Pay Per View, but still, these particular Slammy shows still had some great moments. In this mini documentary from Wrestling Bios, we take a look at The Slammy Awards from 1986 to 1997.
