Ahoy, tiki fans! In this episode of Back Shack Cocktails, we’re diving into one of the most legendary mid-century rum drinks ever created: The Captain’s Grog, a triple-rum tiki masterpiece served at the Hukilau Room of the Captain’s Inn in Long Beach, California, circa 1962. This drink is as dramatic in presentation as it is in flavour—with a towering ice cone and layers of tropical complexity. I’ll walk you through the full recipe, a bit of the cocktail’s history, and even show you how to make your own ice cone using a DIY hack inspired by Beachbum Berry. 🧾 Full Recipe: The Captain’s Grog ¾ oz dark Jamaican rum ¾ oz gold Puerto Rican rum ¾ oz light rum ½ oz fresh lime juice ½ oz grapefruit juice ½ oz maple syrup (Grade A only) ½ oz orange curaçao ½ oz falernum (or homemade Falernum #9) 3 drops vanilla extract 3 drops almond extract 1 oz soda water Instructions: Shake everything except the soda with ice. Add soda water (but I skipped that for this video, it's optional) to the shaker, give it a gentle stir, and strain into a glass over crushed ice or your custom ice cone. Sip through a straw. Garnish optional—but the ice cone is mandatory for that true vintage tiki vibe! ⚓ What Is a Grog? The term “Grog” dates back to the Royal Navy in the 1700s, when Admiral Edward Vernon introduced a diluted rum ration to keep sailors hydrated, less drunk, and (thanks to the citrus) protected against scurvy. It was a daily morale booster—one part medical necessity, one part anti-mutiny strategy. Over time, grog evolved from a simple rum + lime + water combo into a creative foundation for complex tiki drinks in the 20th century. The Captain’s Grog is one of the best examples—honouring the nautical roots but with way more flavour. 🍍 Why You’ll Love This Drink Three types of rum = deep, layered flavour Maple syrup + falernum = warm and spicy-sweet Grapefruit + lime = bright, tropical acidity That epic ice cone = pure presentation power 🧊 Ice Cone Kit I used the Cocktail Kingdom Navy Grog Ice Cone Kit, originally inspired by classic tiki bar molds from the mid-1900s. You can also make one using a pilsner glass, shaved ice, and a chopstick for the straw hole.
