APOSL - Blind Beer Tasting Date : 7 & 18 March 2015 Brands : 4 brands namely; Anchor, Tiger, Carlsberg and Heineken Number of participants : 9 Introduction Everyone has their own favorite local beer, and by local I mean commonly available beer in Malaysia. But is your liking really based on the taste of the beer or the effect of branding from the beer industry i.e. Heineken is perceived as premium, hence the higher than average price while Anchor is perceived as a low grade because it doesn’t look as hip as Tiger. In this blind tasting, 2 types of data were collected. 1. The Perception Participants were asked to rate the 4 brands of beer listed above base on their recollection, or in another way of saying, how the marketing and branding influenced how one memorised the taste 2. The Blind Tasting Another set of data was collected after the participants tasted all the beers without knowing the brand, therefore the ratings were solely on one’s taste preference The Methods 1. Participants were asked to fill up their name, gender and rate themselves on how much they love beer 2. BEFORE the blind tasting, participants were required to give ratings on the beers for tasting i.e. Anchor, Tiger, Carlsberg and Heineken 3. The beers were poured into white paper cups with markings A, B , C and D at random. Each brands were written at the bottom of the forms as record and folded to conceal. 4. The cups were then served to the participants by another designated individual who wasn’t present during the pouring. 5. The person pouring the beer remained behind the scene throughout the entire blind tasting to avoid interaction with the participants 6. The participants were advised to taste the beers in any order they wish and rate each of them base on their preference. 7. After all the ratings were recorded, the participants were asked to unfold the forms below to disclose the brand of each beer The Results for Perception 1. Anchor - Mean 6.3, Median 6, Mode 8, Range 6 2. Tiger - Mean 6.6, Median 8, Mode 8, Range 7 3. Carlsberg - Mean 6.7, Median 6, Mode 6, Range 7 4.
