Cataract is the clouding of the natural crystalline lens. When this lens is supposed to be clear, is clouded, when that happens, the rays of light that is entering the eyes , they are disturbed by the clouding of the lens and all of them do not enter the eye to reach the retina. If that happens, the patient is not able to see clearly. This happens mostly in 90% of the cases, as part pf an age related process, Just like you develop wrinkles on your skin, you develop cataracts in your eyes. So it is not a disease at all That being, said I would like to say that cataract surgeries are one of the most commonly performed surgery in the world and now in today’s time and age when you remove the cataract, you replace it with an intraocular lens Two and a half decades ago, just removing the cataract was not followed by implanting and intraocular lens. So the patient is eft with wearing a thick glass after surgery. You must have seen a few elderly people having thick glasses. They might have undergone cataract surgery in the previous times when there was no intraocular lens. This indeed a miserable condition. Intraocular lens can give you freedom from glasses, for distance and if you want even for your near work. How is that possible. The intraocular lens are of different varieties now. One variety is known as a unifocal or monofocal intraocular lens. These monofocal lenses will give you a good vision for either distance or if you opt for near work, or near vison. There is another kind of intraocular lens, which is known as multifocal lenses. Multifocal lenses gives you freedom form glasses for both disgrace and reading. But you need to talk to your ophthalmologist whether are you a suitable patient for a multifocal lens. Well, even if you are not a suitable for a multifocal intraocular lens, with a monofocal lens, there is an option that your one eye is implanted for lens for distance vision and another eye is implanted with a lens for near vision.
