(24 Jan 1999) Spanish/Nat Pope John Paul II has delivered a sermon to the masses in the Virgin of Guadalupe Basilica in Mexico City on the first day of his visit to Mexico. Speaking at one of the most important shrines of Roman Catholicism, the Pope urged Christians across the Americas to make the region a "continent of life". He also announced a new regional strategy for the church, saying Catholics must struggle against the excesses of capitalism. (M) Millions of Mexicans with flickering candles and yellow-and-white Vatican flags showered the pontiff with adoration along the streets of his route. They seemed as thrilled by the fourth papal visit as they were by the first 20 years ago - many scrabbling to get a good view along the papal route. They packed the area surrounding the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Inside the Basilica the pope prayed to the Virgin's image in front of an estimated 10-thousand. The church says the Virgin's image appeared on the cloak of a peasant in 1531 - the appearance helped make the European church accessible to Indians in the Americas. The 78-year-old pontiff, on a six-day visit to Mexico and the United States, paused often during his homily. But he spoke relatively clearly in four languages - Spanish, Portuguese, French and English. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "Dear brothers and sisters, it was 20 years ago when I came here to communicate the message of the divine providence here, in the Basilica of the Virgin of Guadalupe." SUPER CAPTION: Pope John Paul II The pontiff urged Catholics to work to rid the Americas of abortion, racism, violence, terrorism and drug-trafficking. He also told Christians across the Americas to make the region a "continent of life". In addition, the pope announced a new regional strategy for the church. It includes working against the excesses of capitalism and trying harder to reach the rich and powerful, not just the poor. After his homily, the pontiff leaned on his bishop's staff topped with a silver crucifix and aides supported him as he climbed and descended the stairs of the altar. He then drew cheers by urging churches throughout the Americas to honour the Virgin of Guadalupe on December 12 - a national holiday. Some of the faithful had waited for days along the Pope's route. Dancing, singing and chanting, the crowd seemed happy to brave the 43 degrees Fahrenheit (six degrees Celsius) chill - at least for the duration of the papal visit.
