To keep your Beretta 85 in optimal condition, regular cleaning is essential. Follow this step-by-step guide based on general best practices for cleaning firearms to ensure your 85 Cheetah stays in peak performance. Step 1: Ensure the Firearm is Unloaded Safety is always the first priority. Follow these steps to ensure the Beretta 85 is completely unloaded before cleaning: Remove the magazine by pressing the magazine release button. Pull back the slide and lock it open using the slide stop. Visually and physically inspect the chamber and magazine well to ensure no rounds are present. Release the slide and move to the next step. Step 2: Field Strip the Beretta 85 Cheetah To properly clean your Beretta 85, you’ll need to field strip it into its main components. Rotate the takedown lever located on the right side of the frame downward. Hold the slide securely and release it by pulling it forward and off the frame. Remove the recoil spring and guide rod by lifting them out of the slide. Remove the barrel by sliding it upward and out through the front of the slide. You now have the major components separated for cleaning: the slide, frame, barrel, and recoil spring assembly. Step 3: Clean the Barrel The barrel is one of the most critical components to clean since residue can build up and affect accuracy and performance. Attach a bore brush to your cleaning rod and apply a small amount of solvent. Run the brush through the barrel, starting from the chamber and moving toward the muzzle. Do this several times to break up carbon and fouling. Attach a patch holder to your cleaning rod, and push a cleaning patch soaked in solvent through the barrel. Repeat with clean patches until they come out without debris. Finally, run a lightly oiled patch through the barrel to protect it from moisture and corrosion. Step 4: Clean the Slide The slide houses important components like the firing pin and extractor, so it’s crucial to keep it clean. Use a nylon brush or toothbrush to apply a small amount of solvent to the inside of the slide. Focus on the slide rails, breech face, and extractor area. Wipe down the slide with a lint-free cloth to remove the solvent and any loosened debris. Use cotton swabs or a soft-bristled brush to clean small, hard-to-reach areas within the slide. Ensure everything is dry before moving to lubrication. Step 5: Clean the Frame The frame houses the trigger mechanism, slide rails, and other moving parts. Using a nylon brush or toothbrush, apply solvent to the slide rails, trigger area, and other parts of the frame. Wipe the frame down with a dry cloth to remove any fouling or carbon buildup. Clean out smaller areas using cotton swabs or a soft-bristled brush. Pay special attention to the rails where the slide makes contact with the frame. Step 6: Clean the Recoil Spring and Guide Rod The recoil spring and guide rod also need attention to maintain smooth cycling. Wipe the recoil spring and guide rod down with a clean cloth. No need for excessive lubrication; just make sure they are clean and free from debris. Step 7: Lubricate the Beretta 85 Cheetah Proper lubrication ensures that your pistol runs smoothly without excessive wear. Barrel: Apply a thin layer of oil to the outer surfaces of the barrel, especially where it contacts the slide. Slide rails: Use a small amount of oil on the slide rails of both the frame and slide for smooth operation. Recoil spring assembly: A very light application of oil to the spring can help ensure proper functioning. Trigger and hammer mechanism: Apply a drop of oil to any visible moving parts in the trigger and hammer assembly. Be cautious not to over-lubricate the pistol; a thin film is usually all that’s needed. Step 8: Reassemble the Beretta 85 Cheetah After cleaning and lubrication, it’s time to put everything back together. Reinsert the barrel back into the slide. Place the recoil spring and guide rod into position on the barrel. Align the slide with the frame rails and slide it back onto the frame. Once the slide is aligned, rotate the takedown lever back to its original position. Perform a quick function check by pulling the slide back and dry firing to ensure everything is working correctly. Step 9: Final Wipe Down After reassembling, give the exterior of the pistol a final wipe down.
