As an attorney, nobody teaches you how to deal with the stresses of the job, and there certainly are plenty of aspects of this job that can be stressful. This is why I’ve spent years tinkering with my habits, trying to determine the best ways to not only reduce stress, but to also prevent stress from even happening. Here are my top 10 tips to reduce/prevent stress in your life: 1. Take large breaks during the day. While it can be easy to get caught up in your work, taking a substantial break during your workday can do wonders for your mental health, particularly when it comes to getting sleep at night. 2. Reduce the amount of Zoom calls. The physical and mental fatigue you can get from sitting across from a screen on Zoom calls all day can be exhausting. This is why I make an effort to take as many calls as I can over the phone, giving me the ability to move around or even take a walk during the call, for a change of scenery. 3. Try not to worry about money. While this is easier said than done, it’s key that you try to focus on long-term financial planning rather than immediately worrying about short-term, exact dollar amounts. 4. Curate the content you consume. With all of the negativity in the world today, it’s more important than ever that you curate the content you consume. Even the posts you see on social media can have an impact on your mental health. 5. Do not read new emails after 7 PM. The last thing you want to read before you go to bed is a work email that may upset or trigger you, thus hindering your ability to get a restful night’s sleep. This is why I don’t read any new work emails past 7 PM. 6. Do not be reactive. Though it can be easy sometimes to react impulsively, or emotionally, to any issues that may arise, reacting emotionally won’t solve your problem. It’s important to keep your calm and keep a level head to solve any problems as they come up. 7. Be mindful of what you put in your body. You’d be surprised at how unhealthy much of the food served at restaurants is, particularly with all the fats, sugars, and oils they often use. Additionally, I highly recommend limiting your alcohol intake. If you put high quality foods in your body, you’ll start noticing the difference in your everyday life. 8. Go to bed an hour earlier. Sleep is absolutely essential to helping manage stress. I try to put everything down by 9:30, giving me time to settle down for the night and unwind for bed. Try reading a book, or making a quick phone call to a loved one, rather than staring at a screen on social media before bed. 9. Have high standards for your work. When you have high standards for your work and client service, it becomes much easier to prevent any issues from arising at work, or with a client. 10. Go outside at night and look at the sky. Sometimes, a broader perspective can really help to reduce your stress levels. If you just go outside at night and look up at the sky, you can see how small we truly are in the universe, and how small our problems really are.
