Edward Taylor plays the Carillon de Longpont. Vierne was inspired to write this work on hearing the four church bells on the 15th August 1913 whilst visiting the Chateau de Longpont where he was a regular visitor. It was later dedicated to his brother René Vierne, killed on the 29th May 1918, not far from Longpont. Vierne was organist at Notre Dame de Paris and presided over the great Cavaille-Coll organ. This set of pieces however was written for Harmonium or a small two manual instrument. It is therefore possible to perform all the pieces without pedals. The Carillon is first heard in the pedals on with majestic chords in the hands. The sound reduces and dance like middle section sees the Carillon thrown around the parts. A recap of the opening material makes way for a Coda with fast moving notes in all parts. The piece ends in triumphant fashion. Performed on the Willis Organ of Carlisle Cathedral Please like, comment, share and subscribe. Thanks!
