Operational planning involves creating a working plan of what an organization will accomplish within the coming year. It focuses on the when, what, who, and how much. It also looks at weekly and daily tasks. Not only does operational planning create a vision for the future, it also helps plan the specific tasks that will lead to that goal. According to FEMA, the United States Federal Emergency Management Agency, operational plans provide a description of roles and responsibilities, tasks, integration, and actions required of a jurisdiction or its departments and agencies. There are two types of operational plans. Ongoing plans or standing plans are used for projects that extend into the future. They can be adapted over time. Examples of this type of plan would be planning for future hirings, workforce development, or learning and training measures. Single use plans are created for a time specific project with strict deadlines formed around fixing a particular problem. Some examples could be looking at fiscal year spending or obtaining new software. These kind of problems are often identified during a gap analysis. Operational planning looks at how each department will accomplish projects throughout the organization in order to help the company achieve its vision. There are many benefits to operational planning, and it can rely heavily on projectbased measures within departments. Operational plans encourage collaboration, with members of different departments being assigned roles, tasks, and expectations early on in the planning process. Because its goals are realistic and practical, operational planning can help a company achieve success. It can also increase productivity by offering guidance, direction, and clear deliverables. Most operational plans are project based, and after each project is completed, there's often a postproject meeting to identify opportunities for the future.
